Emergency services responded swiftly to Mersea House on Harts Lane, Ilford, around 1am on Sunday following reports of a strong burning smell from residents. The building’s automated fire alarm also activated, prompting a full high-rise emergency response from the London Fire Brigade (LFB).
Fire crews immediately ordered a mass evacuation to ensure the safety of all occupants. Multiple fire stations dispatched teams to the scene to investigate the cause of the alarm. Fortunately, no visible flames were found during the inspection.
Firefighters suspect the incident may have been caused by a minor electrical fault or a faulty appliance, though investigations remain ongoing to determine the exact source.
All residents were safely accounted for with no injuries reported, providing reassurance amid recent concerns over tower block safety. A spokesperson for the London Fire Brigade said: “We responded swiftly to reports of smoke and a fire alarm sounding at Mersea House. Given the nature of the building, a high-rise response was activated. Crews carried out a full evacuation and a detailed investigation to ensure the safety of all residents.”
