A 21-year-old man from Middle Wallop, Stockbridge, has been jailed following a violent attack on an 85-year-old pensioner in Salisbury during the early hours of 25 January 2025. Morgan Rees pleaded guilty to Section 18 GBH at Salisbury Crown Court and was sentenced to 3 years and 4 months in prison for the unprovoked assault that left the elderly victim seriously injured.
The shocking late-night attack took place after Rees spent the evening drinking at various pubs and clubs around Salisbury. During this time, he was involved in disorderly conduct on Brown Street. Later, at approximately 3am, Rees targeted the pensioner who had stopped in a layby in his van.
Rees forcibly opened the vehicle door, repeatedly punched the driver, dragged him to the ground, and continued to attack him with punches and kicks. The victim suffered serious injuries as a result of the assault.
Speaking in a court statement, the victim said, “I cannot for the life of me comprehend why this guy attacked me. I am a defenceless 85-year-old man who was sat in my van minding my own business.” He described the ongoing trauma, adding, “Every time I shave my face and look in the mirror, I have to always take care of myself because of the damage that was caused to my eye socket.” The attack has left him fearful of going out alone at night, particularly in Salisbury.
Detective Sergeant Emma Fisher from South CID condemned the attack, describing it as “unprovoked” and “prolonged.” She criticised the level of violence used and welcomed the sentence, emphasising that “violence of any kind will not be tolerated.”
In addition to his prison sentence, Morgan Rees was disqualified from driving for 32 months and ordered to pay a £228 victim surcharge as part of his punishment for the violent assault.
