Kent Police and emergency services were scrambled to Rope Walk in Sandwich on Tuesday morning after a road sweeper spotted a body in the water. The grim discovery followed a welfare check earlier in the day.
Coastguards in drysuits began searching the water from around 8.30am. Part of Rope Walk was cordoned off by police crews to facilitate the search. A coastguard search and rescue team from Deal joined the efforts. Kent Fire and Rescue also sent a fire engine and officer to assist at 9.22am.
A Kent Police spokesman confirmed: “Kent Police was called to Woodnesborough Road, Sandwich at 9am on Tuesday 29 November 2022 following concern for a man in the area.”
“Officers attended along with South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service. A man in his 50s was pronounced deceased at the scene.”
The death is not being treated as suspicious. A report will be prepared for the coroner as investigations continue.
