A suspected gas leak in south-east London forced emergency responders to evacuate approximately 100 residents and business owners near New Cross Road overnight.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) confirmed the leak was detected late on July 9, prompting immediate safety measures. As a result, New Cross Road is closed both ways between Florence Road and Deptford Bridge.
As of 7:30am on July 10, the road closure remains in effect, leading to major disruption during the morning rush hour. Eastbound traffic can only access the area from Deptford High Street, while westbound traffic is fully blocked past Deptford Bridge.
Transport for London and local officials have urged drivers and commuters to avoid the area, warning that delays could continue throughout the morning peak.
The London Fire Brigade issued a statement saying, “Firefighters are responding to a suspected gas leak on New Cross Road. Around 100 people have been evacuated from the immediate area as a precaution and road closures are in place. Disruption is expected to last through the night. Please avoid the area as crews respond.”
Residents reported smelling gas late in the evening before emergency services arrived. One eyewitness described the scene as “calm but tense,” commending the crews for their swift response and evacuation efforts.
Fortunately, there have been no reports of injuries related to the incident so far.
