Emergency services, including Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service, responded to a serious incident on the M62 in Merseyside tonight involving a lorry fire. National Highways Traffic Officers also attended the scene to manage the resulting traffic disruption.
The M62 was closed in both directions overnight, with the closure expected to last throughout the night. This has caused major delays for motorists travelling in the area.
Eastbound drivers are advised to follow solid triangle diversion signs. The diversion route is as follows: exit the M62 eastbound at Junction 7, join the A57 westbound, continue to the Lingley Green Avenue junction and turn left. Follow Lingley Green Avenue to the Whittle Avenue roundabout and turn left onto Whittle Avenue. At the Burtonwood Road roundabout, turn left onto Burtonwood Road, then at the Burtonwood Road/M62 Junction 8 roundabout, turn right to rejoin the M62 eastbound.
Westbound traffic must follow hollow square diversion signs. The route is: exit the M62 westbound at Junction 8 and take the second exit onto Burtonwood Road southbound. Continue to the Westbrook Way roundabout and take the third exit onto Whittle Avenue southbound. At the Malvern Cross roundabout, take the third exit onto Lingley Green Avenue westbound. At the A57 junction, turn right onto the A57 westbound and continue to the M62 Junction 7 roundabout. Take the second exit to rejoin the M62 westbound.
Motorists are urged to follow the diversion signs carefully and expect ongoing delays while emergency crews work to resolve the incident.
