M6 Chaos in Warwickshire After Police Incident and Car Fire

Traffic on the M6 through Warwickshire ground to a halt this afternoon after a police-led incident, quickly followed by a car fire that made matters worse. Motorists faced massive delays and bumper-to-bumper queues in both directions.

Queues Backed Up for Miles

Drivers were forced to abandon their vehicles and walk along the carriageway as congestion built between the M1/A14 Catthorpe Interchange and Junction 1 (Rugby/Lutterworth) northbound. Southbound traffic crawled between Junction 2 (Coventry) and Junction 1. Warwickshire Police confirmed the initial “concern-for-welfare” incident was resolved around 3:35pm.

Car Fire Sparks Fresh Shutdown

Just as traffic started to ease, a car fire around 5:00pm prompted a full temporary northbound closure between Junction 1 and Junction 2, near the earlier incident site. National Highways teams were on hand to manage traffic flow and set up diversions, but gridlock persisted well into the evening.

Long Delays Despite Lane Reopenings

  • Police blocked M6 northbound between M1/A14 and J1 for the initial welfare incident.
  • Southbound lanes closed between J2 and J1 during the disruption.
  • Car fire led to another northbound closure between J1 and J2 around 5pm.
  • All lanes reopened by early evening, but heavy traffic lingered.
  • Traffic information and updates remain vital for Warwickshire journeys.
