Tragedy struck the M40 near High Wycombe today when a multi-vehicle pile-up resulted in two fatalities and 12 others injured. The incident occurred at approximately 8.15 a.m. on Sunday, bringing the busy motorway to a complete standstill.
The southbound M40 is currently closed between Junction 5 at Stokenchurch and Junction 4 for High Wycombe. Initially, both carriageways were shut, but police reopened one lane shortly after 11 a.m. to help alleviate traffic congestion. Despite this, delays of up to 30 minutes are still being reported.
Thames Valley Police confirmed that they are conducting an investigation into the collision before the wreckage can be cleared. A spokesperson from National Highways stated, “Once the investigation is complete, vehicle recovery and clean-up will begin.”
Emergency services responded swiftly, with a spokesperson from South Central Ambulance Service detailing the scale of the response. Three ambulances, a Hazardous Area Response Team, an air ambulance, an emergency car, and paramedic team leaders and officers were all deployed to the scene.
“We treated many patients on-site, with several rushed to hospital for further care,” the ambulance service spokesperson added.
