The M25 motorway came to a complete standstill in the early hours of Monday after a distressed man threatened to jump from an overbridge. Police and Highways England closed eight lanes to manage the tense situation.
A barefoot man standing on the Ockham Lane Bridge, located between junctions 9 and 10 near Wisley, called 999 at around 1:50 a.m. He informed officers that he was feeling suicidal but did not want to jump because of the traffic below, according to a police source.
Officers quickly secured the bridge with cordon tape and dispatched trained negotiators to speak with the man and persuade him to come down safely.
After tense negotiations, the man agreed to come down and was taken into police custody. The South East Coast Ambulance Service then transported him to hospital for medical evaluation.
The incident caused significant delays on both sides of the M25 for nearly two hours. Surrey Police have declined to provide further comments or release additional details about the event.
