The M20 motorway is completely shut in both directions between Junction 11a (Channel Tunnel) and Junction 11 (Hythe) after a lorry caught fire early this morning.
Emergency services responded swiftly just before 9am following reports of a heavy goods vehicle ablaze on the London-bound carriageway. Both eastbound and westbound lanes have been closed, causing major disruption for motorists.
National Highways shared images showing thick smoke plumes rising from the burning lorry as fire crews worked to extinguish the blaze. Police officers and Highways Traffic Officers remain at the scene, managing traffic and assisting with recovery efforts.
Severe congestion has been reported, with delays stretching back for miles in both directions. Drivers are being diverted via the A20 (Ashford Road). Motorists are advised to allow extra travel time or seek alternative routes. National Highways recommends avoiding the area where possible.
Clearance and recovery work is expected to continue throughout the morning.
A Kent Police spokesperson said: “We are currently at the scene of a lorry fire between Junctions 11 and 11a of the M20. Both carriageways have been closed to allow emergency crews to safely manage the situation. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.”
No injuries have been reported so far. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
