A significant six-hour delay at the Eurotunnel on Monday afternoon caused widespread disruption that continued into Tuesday morning. A technical fault resulted in traffic coming to a complete halt, leaving heavy goods vehicle (HGV) drivers stranded overnight on the M20 in Brock.
Coastguard teams responded by distributing food packages and water to the truck drivers stuck in the queue. National Highways and the Kent Resilience Forum confirmed that Operation Brock was activated from Monday, December 12, to handle the anticipated increase in passenger numbers ahead of the Christmas period.
The contraflow system of Operation Brock is now operational on the M20, designed to prevent the motorway from turning into an extended lorry park. The queues of freight vehicles waiting to cross the Channel at both the Port of Dover and the Eurotunnel terminal in Folkestone extended for six miles.
This activation aims to maintain traffic flow and reduce delays during the busy festive season, ensuring smoother travel for both freight and passenger vehicles.
