A major crash involving three vehicles has closed the M20 near Junction 3 (Swanley) this morning, October 16, 2024, causing significant disruption and long delays for motorists travelling towards London.
The collision occurred just before 7am and has resulted in the motorway being shut in both directions. The M20 eastbound is fully blocked between Junction 1 (M25) and Junction 3 (M26), while the westbound lanes are also closed at Junction 1, bringing traffic to a complete standstill.
Traffic is being diverted off the motorway at the exit slip roads and then routed back on via the entry slip roads in an effort to ease congestion. However, drivers heading into London are facing major gridlock extending back to Junction 2 (Dartford).
Authorities have advised motorists to use the M25 and M26 as alternative routes. Specifically, traffic on the M25 clockwise towards Maidstone is recommended to take the A2 coastbound at Junction 2, continue along the M2, and then join the A249 southbound at Junction 5.
Emergency services are actively managing the scene. A National Highways spokesperson confirmed, “Kent Fire and Rescue Service has three fire engines at the scene, assisting Kent Police and the South East Coast Ambulance Service.”
All traffic is currently being held on the main carriageway between Junction 1 of the M25 and Junction 3 of the M26. The coastbound entry slip from the clockwise M25 remains closed while emergency crews continue their work.
Officials have urged drivers to avoid the area if possible due to the significant delays and ongoing emergency response. Motorists are advised to stay tuned for further updates as the situation develops.
