The M20 coastbound between Junctions 8 and 9 has been closed as Eurotunnel suspends all services through the Channel Tunnel. This emergency closure aims to manage freight traffic safely amid ongoing disruptions.
The motorway shutdown allows lorries heading to the continent to queue safely on the empty stretch of road. This measure is intended to keep Kent’s wider road network flowing and to prevent widespread tailbacks.
Only freight bound for the European Union is permitted on the M20 during this closure. All other traffic must follow official diversions posted along the route.
This unprecedented emergency closure was authorised by Kent Police and the Kent Resilience Forum after careful consideration of public safety and the impact on traffic volumes.
