The M20 motorway was shut in both directions between junctions 10 and 11 on the evening of Saturday 18 June 2021 after police received concerning reports about a person’s wellbeing.
The closure, which began shortly after 8pm, affected the stretch from Junction 10 near Ashford to Junction 11 close to Westenhanger, bringing traffic to a complete standstill.
Multiple members of the public contacted emergency services to report someone believed to be experiencing a mental health crisis. Kent Police, Ambulance crews, and National Highways Traffic Officers quickly responded and attended the scene.
The road closures caused significant disruption and congestion. Drivers heading coastbound were advised to follow hollow circle diversion signs: exit the M20 at Junction 10, travel east on the A20 towards Folkestone, continue to Junction 11, and then rejoin the M20.
For London-bound traffic, hollow square diversion signs directed drivers to leave the M20 at Junction 11, stay on the A20, and re-enter the M20 at Junction 10.
Kent Police have been approached for comment as the incident remains ongoing. Motorists are urged to plan their journeys accordingly and expect delays in the area.
