A lorry smashed into a bridge support and the central reservation on the M20 between Junction 8 (Maidstone) and Junction 9 (Ashford) on Tuesday evening, causing a multi-vehicle pile-up and bringing traffic to a standstill.
The collision forced the closure of one lane, resulting in gridlock in both directions. National Highways confirmed the westbound M20 reopened early on Wednesday, but one lane remains closed for emergency barrier repairs expected to last all day. Additional overnight work is also planned.
“The lane closure will stay in place throughout the day. The eastbound side has reopened after earlier roadworks,” a National Highways spokesman said.
Fire crews reported that four vehicles were involved in the crash, but thankfully no injuries were sustained. “No firefighting was needed on arrival. We helped Kent Police secure the area,” a fire service spokesman added.
National Highways further explained, “The lorry hit a bridge support and the central reservation, scattering debris. The clean-up will take time, but thankfully no injuries have been reported.”
Motorists should expect heavy traffic and long delays between Junctions 8 and 9. It is advised to follow National Highways and local updates for the latest information and to consider alternative routes to avoid the congestion.
