Kent Police and National Highways are currently managing a significant traffic hold-up on the M20 motorway. Heavy congestion has built up, stretching 4.5 miles approaching Junction 8, with delays reaching up to 50 minutes beyond usual travel times.

Motorists are advised to prepare for prolonged delays and consider alternative travel plans where possible.

Clear Diversion Routes for Freight Traffic

Non-EU freight drivers are instructed to follow the hollow circle diversion symbol to bypass the congestion:

  • Exit the M20 at Junction 8.
  • At the roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the A20 eastbound towards Ashford.
  • Follow the A20 through Harrietsham, Lenham, and Charing to the Drovers roundabout.
  • Take the 1st exit to continue on the A20 towards the M20.
  • Rejoin the M20 at Junction 9 roundabout, taking the 3rd exit onto the coastbound M20.

EU freight traffic should leave and rejoin the M20 at Junction 8 using the exit and entry slip roads as normal.

Plan Ahead or Face Major Delays

Drivers caught up in this closure should expect serious delays. Experts recommend allowing extra travel time, considering alternative routes, or postponing journeys if possible.
