The M2 coastbound remains closed between Junction 5 (Sittingbourne) and Junction 6 (Faversham) following a serious collision involving a pedestrian and a lorry on the night of Wednesday, November 20. The crash occurred at around 8:10 PM.
Emergency services including Kent Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and National Highways have been at the scene throughout the night conducting investigations.
The motorway closure is expected to last until at least midday on November 21. Police have warned drivers to expect major delays and to seek alternative routes. A police spokesperson said, “The coastbound carriageway is expected to remain closed for several hours. Motorists should plan alternative routes and check for updates on the Highways website.”
Adding to the disruption, one lane on the London-bound side at Junction 6 is also closed, causing tailbacks stretching over a mile.
Road users caught in the traffic jam faced hours of delays in sub-zero temperatures overnight. Traffic began to move from the back of the queue after 2:00 AM as trapped vehicles were cleared.
Drivers are advised to follow the official diversion marked with a solid circle on signs: exit the M2 eastbound at Junction 5, take the A249 southbound towards Maidstone, travel approximately five miles to join the M20 eastbound at Junction 7, exit the M20 at Junction 8 and take the A20 eastbound towards Lenham. Continue along the A20 for nine miles through Harrietsham and Lenham to the A252 at Charing, then take the A252 eastbound towards Challock, followed by the A251 northbound to Faversham. Finally, rejoin the M2 at Junction 6.
Motorists are urged to allow extra time for their journeys and to monitor live traffic updates via the Highways England website and social media channels to avoid further delays.
