Three Kent Police call handlers became real-life lifesavers after encountering a serious crash while off duty. Lucy, Abi, and Amber, all members of the Kent Police Force Control Room (FCR), sprang into action on Tuesday 4 January 2022 in Gillingham.
Just before 5pm, the trio came across a pedestrian in their seventies who was unconscious after being hit by a car on the busy Hoath Way dual carriageway. Passersby were already assisting, with one person performing CPR and others attempting to control traffic.
Lucy, who is trained in first aid and a former lifeguard, took over CPR until paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service arrived. She stayed with the woman until she was rushed to hospital.
Meanwhile, Abi and Amber worked diligently to secure the dangerous accident scene. With the woman lying in a fast lane, they used a large scarf to shield her from onlookers, preserving her dignity while also protecting traumatised members of the public.
The pedestrian was taken to a London hospital in a life-threatening condition but is now conscious and steadily recovering.
“Lucy, Abi and Amber were not only brave, but they were also professional and compassionate,” praised Chief Inspector Lee Cheesman. “They absolutely embodied Kent Police values by doing the right thing and putting vulnerable people first. I am incredibly proud of them.”
The heroic off-duty trio face no doubt, just a heap of thanks for saving a life and handling a high-stakes emergency like the professionals they are.
