Chaos erupted at Kennington Tube Station this morning after a fire broke out on the Northern Line tracks. Smoke and flames were reported on Platform 1, leading to the immediate evacuation and temporary closure of the station.
The London Fire Brigade (LFB) quickly dispatched several fire engines to the scene following reports of thick smoke coming from the tracks. British Transport Police and Transport for London (TfL) staff worked together to secure the area and assist commuters affected by the disruption.
One passenger described the situation, saying, “It was really scary — the smoke was building up quickly, and station staff moved us out fast.”
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The fire, believed to have started directly on the tracks, caused significant delays and partial suspensions on the Northern Line during the morning rush hour. TfL advised commuters to use alternative routes and warned that delays would continue until Kennington Station reopens.
British Transport Police confirmed they are investigating the cause of the fire but currently have no reason to suspect any criminal activity. A spokesperson stated, “We are working with our partners to establish the cause of the fire and ensure the safety of the network.”
Kennington Station remains closed as safety inspections are ongoing. TfL thanked passengers for their patience and urged them to check live travel updates before planning their journeys.
