Firefighters were called to Wandsworth Prison on Heathfield Road on Wednesday evening after a fire started in a cell inside the prison hospital just before 6pm.
The fire spread quickly but was brought under control within 20 minutes due to the swift response of prison staff.
The prisoner inside the cell suffered from smoke inhalation but did not require hospital treatment.
Thanks to the prison’s ventilation system, the smoke remained contained, and no other inmates needed to be evacuated from the area.
A Prison Service spokesperson said: “A small cell 1 at HMP Wandsworth was quickly extinguished by prison staff. The fire brigade attended as a matter of routine and there were no reported injuries.”
