A major road linking the M2 and Sittingbourne has been closed following a fatal pedestrian crash early Wednesday morning. The A249 near the Keycol Hill roundabout remains shut in both directions as police conduct a detailed investigation.
Just after 1 a.m. on Wednesday, emergency services responded to reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle near the busy A249 dual carriageway. Despite rapid medical attention, the pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police quickly established a cordon and launched an urgent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The coroner has been informed, with the death currently classified as unexplained but not suspicious.
Kent Police are appealing for witnesses and any dashcam footage that could assist in understanding the events leading up to the collision. The victim’s family has been notified and is receiving support from specially trained officers.
Specialist collision investigators are present at the scene, and drone teams have been deployed to capture aerial images to aid the investigation. The A249 is expected to remain closed for several hours, likely throughout the morning, resulting in significant disruption for commuters and local traffic.
A Highways England spokesman said: “The A249 near Sittingbourne is closed in both directions between the A2 (Key Street) and B2006 because of a police-led incident. Kent Police are managing the scene, supported by National Highways officers handling traffic control.”
“There’s no clear timeline yet for reopening. Motorists should expect delays and consider alternative routes.”
