The M3 southbound is completely closed between Basingstoke South and Winchester following a deadly rush hour collision early this morning.
The horror crash unfolded just after 6.30am, when a vehicle veered off the road and smashed into a tree. The driver was then thrown from the car and struck by another vehicle on the busy carriageway.
Emergency services quickly descended on the scene, along with collision investigators. The fatal incident involved four vehicles between Winchester Services and Junction 8 (Andover).
A South Central Ambulance Service spokesman revealed that the man “walked onto the carriageway” after the vehicle he was in stopped by the roadside. The injured man, who was travelling with a female companion, exited the car and stepped onto the motorway, where he was then struck.
Police have launched an investigation but have yet to confirm the exact circumstances of the crash. Drivers heading south are warned the M3 will remain shut well into midday. Alternative routes via the A303 and A34 are strongly advised.
More updates will follow as the investigation continues.
