Speaking at a rally in Barnsley, Farage condemned the Prime Minister’s controversial decision to appoint Lord Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to the US despite Mandelson failing crucial security vetting. “The very thought that Mandelson was even chosen in the first place is quite extraordinary,” Farage said. “The thought that the PM wanted this guy to be there on Pennsylvania Avenue without any vetting process having been done is astonishing.”
Farage emphasised the serious risks involved, noting that Mandelson would have had access to top-secret intelligence, including details about Britain’s nuclear capabilities. He also criticised Starmer’s reputation as the “man of process,” saying, “He has ridden roughshod over normal procedure. His actions and his judgement are seriously in doubt. The Reform UK leader warned that Starmer will “cling on” until polling day on 7 May but predicted a Labour defeat in the Red Wall, South Wales, and Scotland would end his tenure. “If Labour get obliterated in the Red Wall, in South Wales and in Scotland, then he’ll be gone by the end of May,” Farage declared.
These claims come amid reports that Sir Keir Starmer has not denied speculation that Downing Street considered appointing former communications director Matthew Doyle—a figure involved in his own scandal—to a senior diplomatic role. Senior officials continue to resign around Starmer.
