170-Year-Old Shell Sparks Drama at Totland Bay

The Needles Coastguard and bomb disposal experts pulled off a daring operation after a 170-year-old shell from the 1850s was found live and ticking at Totland Bay.

Public Alert Triggers Bomb Squad Response

A vigilant member of the public flagged down the coastguard, who quickly called in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team. Once on the scene, they confirmed the rusty relic was still live and dangerous.

Controlled Explosion Near Rising Tide

The shell was blown up in a controlled detonation after the coastguard set up a 200-metre safety cordon. With incoming tides threatening the area, Freshwater Independent Lifeboat was called in for safety cover.

The scene was declared safe just after 9.30pm, ending the tense seaside drama.

Thomas had applied for bail, but the court refused the application and ordered that he remain in custody. He is now due to appear at Portsmouth Crown Court on Tuesday, September 29. The criminal damage allegation relates to an incident in the Channel on Tuesday, September 22. Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the charge followed an allegation that a boat was damaged while an emergency responder was on board.
