In the early hours of Saturday, 11 October, both RNLI lifeboats from Eastbourne were launched following reports of an injured person stranded on cliffs to the west of the town.
The emergency call was received at 1.42am, prompting a large-scale response led by HM Coastguard. Lifeboats from Eastbourne, Newhaven, and Birling Gap combined efforts to assist in the search.
Additional support came from Eastbourne Coastguard Rescue Teams, Sussex Police, South East Coast Ambulance Service, and the coastguard helicopter Rescue 363. Teams worked through pitch-black conditions, carefully searching the dangerous cliff areas for the casualty.
Just before 4am, Sussex Police located the injured individual outside the initial search zone. Following this, both lifeboats were stood down and returned to their base.
The RNLI reminds the public: “In a coastal emergency, always dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.”
