Major emergency response teams were called into action in Portsmouth Harbour on Friday night following two separate rescue incidents. Just after 10.20pm, firefighters from Cosham and Fareham, along with the Water Rescue Support Unit, responded to a man trapped in mud near Port Solent.
The man was stuck at Paulsgrove Lake, Southampton Road, close to the luxury marina and housing estate. Rescue crews worked quickly to haul him to safety before transferring him by lifeboat to shore. South Central Ambulance Service immediately took over his care.
Shortly after this rescue, emergency teams were redeployed to a second incident. Reports came in of a despondent man spotted in the water near Portchester. Portsmouth emergency teams collaborated with Hampshire Constabulary to carry out the rescue.
Thankfully, the man was recovered safely from the water with no reported injuries.
A UK Coastguard spokesperson confirmed that the second rescue was a police-led operation. The police requested Coastguard resources, which led to the mobilisation of Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Lifeboats along with a Coastguard Rescue Team.
“The Police have asked us to provide resources. We mobilised the Gosport and Fareham lifeboats and a Coastguard Rescue Team,” the spokesperson said, declining to provide further details.
These dual incidents highlight the swift and professional response from firefighters, ambulance crews, police, and the Coastguard. The coordinated efforts of multiple emergency units ensured that both men were rescued without major harm.
