Tragedy struck just after 6.30pm on Sunday on the westbound M54 near Codsall when a car collided with a heavy goods vehicle (HGV) and then flipped onto the carriageway. Emergency services rushed to the scene where the male driver inside the car suffered serious injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The motorway remained closed for over eight hours as police conducted a crash investigation and cleared the wreckage.
Early this morning around 6.30am, another serious collision occurred on the A5 between Wall Island and Weeford. The crash involved two HGVs and a car, leaving two people critically injured. A male lorry driver was trapped and rescued by fire crews, sustaining life-changing injuries before being rushed to hospital. The car driver suffered life-threatening injuries and was stabilised by advanced trauma doctors at the scene before being taken to a nearby trauma centre for urgent treatment.
The A5 was closed for approximately six hours while emergency teams and police carried out investigations into the incident.
Staffordshire Police have issued an appeal for anyone who witnessed either crash to come forward. Witnesses are encouraged to call 101 to assist with investigations into these serious collisions.
