Motorists in Kent faced unexpected delays today when a herd of cows wandered onto the M20 and M26 motorways, causing major disruption. The unusual incident led to a swift closure of the carriageways and left drivers stuck in a traffic jam.
National Highways confirmed the closure after the cows strayed onto the motorway. Kent Police promptly arrived at the scene to manage the situation, ensuring the safety of both the animals and drivers.
The blockage resulted in tailbacks of up to 80 minutes on the westbound M20, particularly after the M26 junction. Officials have since removed the cows from the road, but some residual delays remain. Traffic is currently moving slowly between junctions J3 and J1 on the westbound M20.
Normal traffic flow is expected to resume between 10:15 am and 10:30 am. In the meantime, Kent Police and National Highways continue to monitor the situation closely to keep the motorway clear.
