A major fire broke out at the back of a home on Marlpit Lane, Coulsdon, this evening following a gas cylinder explosion. The London Fire Brigade (LFB) was alerted after multiple 999 calls reported flames and a suspected blast.
Four fire engines were deployed to tackle the large blaze. A 25-metre safety cordon was quickly established after the explosion was confirmed. Specialist teams from Dowgate Fire Station arrived to investigate the cause and to rule out any foul play.
A fire brigade spokesperson said, “Due to reports of an explosion and the presence of gas cylinders, our crews responded with urgency and extreme caution. Specialist units are now working to determine exactly what happened.”
Meanwhile, officers from the Metropolitan Police assisted with cordon control and public safety as the investigation continues.
Marlpit Lane is currently closed in both directions at the junction with Coulsdon Rise, leading to delays for local traffic and public transport. As of 7:30pm, Transport for London (TfL) bus routes 404 and 466 have been rerouted.
Route 466 Northbound is diverted via Coulsdon Road, Placehouse Lane, Mead Way, Chaldon Way, then back to Marlpit Lane. Route 466 Southbound is rerouted along Marlpit Lane, Chaldon Way, Mead Way, Tolers Lane, The Crossways, returning to Coulsdon Road.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid the area and follow diversion signs. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far. The London Fire Brigade and Metropolitan Police continue their investigation into the cause of the fire.
