A foul chemical stench forced the sudden evacuation of the Smallholders Club in Springvale, Gillingham on Tuesday night. Emergency crews rushed to the scene after party-goers reported the overpowering scent coming from the club’s toilets.
Four fire engines, crews from South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb), and Kent Police swarmed the area to keep the public safe. Staff acted quickly to clear the venue amid growing panic as the strange smell spread.
“We responded to reports of a chemical smell at a premises in Gillingham. Crews worked to ventilate the building and ensure the area was safe. Investigations into the source of the smell are ongoing,” said a Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson.
Kent Police managed traffic to avoid gridlock while emergency vehicles blocked surrounding streets. Residents described the scene as “alarming but very well-coordinated,” noting flashing lights and heavily parked emergency units.
The Smallholders Club remains closed this morning as specialists continue to investigate the cause of the smell. It is unclear if the source was a chemical leak, a system fault, or something else entirely. Fortunately, no injuries or hospitalisations have been reported so far.
