Call the Midwife Spin-Off Buzz: Could Trixie Franklin Get Her Own Show?

Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas has dropped a teaser that the beloved BBC drama might soon “take a break” – sparking rumours of an exciting spin-off brewing behind the scenes.

“Those of us who are most invested with the show, cast and producers alike, who have been there since the beginning, it is our lives. I don’t believe Call The Midwife will ever end. But I do think we might take a break at some point.”

Thomas didn’t spill all the details but hinted at expanding the Call the Midwife world with fresh new stories. And fans might get to dive deeper into the history of one particular fan favourite.

Could We See a Prequel Starring Trixie Franklin?

The Sun reports a spin-off could focus on the “early years” of feisty midwife Trixie Franklin, played by Helen George. The idea? To rewind to the 1950s and showcase Trixie’s beginnings in the NHS, long before the current 1970s setting.

“Trixie is an obvious choice of subject because she is one of the wilder characters at Nonnatus House and therefore has the potential for a more interesting back story,” a TV insider said. “When we first met her in 2012, she was already very worldly in her early twenties. There’s plenty to explore.”

If sealed, expect a fresh actress to play a teenage or early-20s Trixie, charting her journey as a young midwife cutting her teeth in a rapidly changing world.

What’s Next for the BBC Hit?

Since its 2012 launch, Call the Midwife has been a ratings powerhouse for the BBC, drawing millions with its heartfelt tales of life, love, and labour.

Series 14 recently wrapped up on Sunday, March 2, leaving fans hungry for what’s next. The BBC hasn’t officially greenlit any spin-offs yet, but with the show’s enduring popularity, a Trixie-focused prequel seems more than plausible.

For now, viewers will have to wait for official news. But one thing’s clear – the world of Call the Midwife may be about to get even bigger and wilder, just like Trixie herself.
