A car fire near East Midlands Airport has caused significant disruption on one of Britain’s busiest motorways. The M1 southbound is completely blocked between junctions 23A and 24, resulting in heavy traffic congestion for drivers travelling around Kegworth and Leicestershire.
National Highways has halted southbound traffic after a vehicle caught fire, triggering a major incident close to the airport. The motorway remains closed as fire crews continue to tackle the blaze, leaving motorists stuck in long queues.
Firefighters from Castle Donington, Coalville, and Loughborough responded quickly to the scene to control the fire. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue confirmed that there have been no injuries reported but warned that the disruption could continue for some time.
“Emergency services are in attendance. Allow extra time if travelling in the area or heading for the airport,” advised National Highways.
