A massive fire tore through the iconic KOKO nightclub in Camden Town on Monday evening. Fire crews were dispatched just before 9pm to tackle the blaze at the well-known venue, which was closed and undergoing refurbishment at the time.
Flames quickly spread across the roof of the six-floor building, prompting nearby workers to assist firefighters by cutting through locks to gain entry as the fire raged out of control. A spokesperson from the London Fire Brigade reported that approximately 30% of the roof was alight when crews arrived on the scene.
“We were called at 8.56pm to a fire at a Camden nightclub under refurbishment. Thirty per cent of the roof is alight. Firefighters are working hard to save the rest of the building. Please avoid the area if possible,” the spokesperson said.
Emergency services responded with six fire engines and 60 firefighters to battle the flames. The iconic North London venue, known for hosting some of the biggest nights in the city, was mid-refurbishment when the fire broke out.
Authorities have urged local residents and visitors to avoid the area while crews continue their efforts to control the fire and assess the damage. KOKO has been a staple of Camden nightlife for decades, making this fire a significant loss for the capital’s clubbing scene.
