Anti-terror police have launched an investigation after a Sunderland supporter posted a sick threat targeting Portsmouth fans ahead of their match at Fratton Park on Thursday.
The vile tweet, which shockingly referenced victims and events from the Manchester terror attack, has sparked widespread outrage online. Numerous fans reported the threat to police, leading the suspect to delete his social media account.
Police and terror specialists are collaborating closely with Hampshire Constabulary and Portsmouth FC to investigate the message and enhance security at the upcoming match.
Hampshire Police stated, “We are aware of threats made on social media regarding the football match between Sunderland and Portsmouth taking place in Portsmouth tomorrow, (Thursday). We are looking into these posts and want to assure the public that a sufficient policing response will be in place for the match tomorrow and that we are working alongside Portsmouth FC.”
Portsmouth FC has confirmed that enhanced security checks will be in place at Fratton Park following the shocking threat to “kill 150 fans.” Officers have pledged to keep supporters safe as inquiries continue.
