The A21 is closed in both directions after a vehicle erupted into a blazing fireball early Thursday morning between Tonbridge and Sevenoaks. The dramatic incident occurred just after 3.20am, causing significant disruption on the major route.
Emergency services including Kent Police, fire crews, and paramedics quickly responded to the scene. Firefighters used two high-pressure hose reels to extinguish the fierce flames engulfing the car. The Kent, Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance also landed on the carriageway to provide life-saving assistance to those involved.
Both the northbound and southbound carriageways remain shut this morning, with closures expected to continue through the morning rush hour. A witness reported hearing a large explosion before the vehicle burst into flames, stating, “A large explosion was heard and the vehicle turned into a fireball.”
Highways England confirmed that the closure extends between Morleys Roundabout (A225 near Sevenoaks) and the A26 near Tonbridge due to the collision. Traffic is being diverted via a complex route using the B245, local Kent council roads, and the A26. Drivers are advised to follow the hollow circle diversion signs and anticipate significant delays.
The recommended diversion route is as follows: at Morleys Roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the B245 (London Road). At the A227 T-junction, follow the local diversion through Yardley Park Road. Then turn right onto the A26 and rejoin the A21 at Vauxhall Lane.
Kent Police and the fire service remain on site managing the incident and investigating the cause of the crash. No official update on casualties has been released at this time. Motorists are urged to plan alternative routes and avoid the area until further notice.
