The A2 heading into London has reopened after a serious four-vehicle crash caused significant disruption earlier today. The collision occurred between Bean (B255) and junction 2 of the M25, known as the Darenth Interchange, resulting in hours of major delays for motorists.
The incident took place on Saturday afternoon, April 19, when a hybrid car flipped over, prompting fire fears due to the vehicle’s battery. Kent Fire and Rescue Service requested a full closure of the road to safely manage the potential fire risk. Three fire engines attended the scene to isolate the overturned hybrid car and prevent any flames from breaking out.
Emergency services treated five people at the scene before transferring them to South East Coast Ambulance Service paramedics. Fortunately, none of the injuries sustained are believed to be life-threatening.
All traffic was stopped during the emergency response, causing significant congestion. Drivers caught in the resulting traffic jam were gradually turned around from the rear of the queue. The delays extended back to Gravesend and Tollgate Services, causing widespread frustration among motorists.
By 5:30pm, National Highways confirmed that the A2 was fully reopened and traffic began to flow freely once again.
