Commuters faced significant disruption this morning as the A2 was shut down in both directions near Dartford following a lorry fire on the eastbound carriageway. The incident caused long delays between the M25/A282 and B255 junctions.
The fire resulted in a complete standstill on the A2. Emergency crews responded swiftly, with fire engines seen racing along the hard shoulder amid thick black smoke. Kent Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they are using hose reel jets and breathing apparatus to tackle the blaze.
Fortunately, no injuries have been reported. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time. Additionally, diesel spillage across the road has extended the closure as recovery efforts continue.
National Highways reported extensive traffic congestion, with a 2-mile tailback eastbound and a 4-mile queue westbound. Motorists are advised to expect delays and allow extra journey time.
A Kent Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service is responding to a lorry fire on the A2 coast-bound, between Dartford and Bean. Three fire engines and a bulk water carrier are at the scene. Crews wearing breathing apparatus are extinguishing the fire. There are no injuries.”
Drivers heading eastbound are advised to follow the solid circle diversion signs: exit the A2 at Darenth interchange and join the A282 northbound towards Dartford. Leave the A282 at junction 1A, then at the first roundabout take the third exit onto the A206 eastbound. Keep left for the fast slip road to Bluewater and continue on the A206 for 2 miles to the B255 junction. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto the B255 southbound towards Bean. Exit the B255 at the junction with the A296, then at the next roundabout keep left for the fast slip onto the A296 eastbound towards Dover to rejoin the A2 eastbound.
