Hampshire Roads Policing officers responded to a crash scene in Eastleigh where they conducted a roadside eyesight test on an 81-year-old driver. The man failed to read a number plate from the mandatory 20-metre distance, leading to immediate action.
The DVLA requires drivers to wear glasses or contact lenses whenever necessary to meet driving vision standards. Drivers with eyesight problems affecting both eyes, or their only eye, must inform the DVLA without delay. However, conditions such as short-sightedness, long-sightedness, or colour blindness do not need to be reported. Additionally, corrective surgery for short-sightedness is exempt if the eyesight standards are still met.
Hampshire Police commented, “We attended an RTC earlier today in Eastleigh. An 81-year-old male involved failed a roadside eyesight test, and his driving licence was revoked by the DVLA at the roadside immediately. Not nice to do but required to help keep roads safer.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder that failing to meet eyesight standards can result in an immediate loss of driving privileges, all in the interest of maintaining road safety across Hampshire.
