Staffordshire Police have confirmed that 24 drivers will be prosecuted for driving the wrong way down the M54 motorway after a crash caused the road to be closed.

The M54 was shut at Junction 1 on Saturday to allow officers to safely manage a road traffic collision. Despite clear closure signs, multiple motorists ignored the warnings and drove against the flow of traffic.

Staffordshire Police issued a statement on X (formerly Twitter) saying, “During the closure, 24 drivers made the dangerous decision to drive the wrong way down the motorway. All 24 will be prosecuted.”

The police force emphasized that driving the wrong way on a motorway is a serious hazard that endangers not only the drivers involved but also other road users and emergency crews working at the scene.

The M54 motorway has now reopened to traffic following the incident.
