The attack left the building severely damaged, sending shockwaves through the usually peaceful market town.

Lincolnshire Police revealed the JCB was stolen locally. Investigators believe the crooks made a swift getaway in a second vehicle, possibly a pickup truck. Roads around the bank remain closed as officers scour the scene for vital clues.

Detective Inspector Paul Sands said: “This type of crime is very unusual for Horncastle and please be reassured we will do all in our power to seek out those responsible and bring them to justice.”

He added, “We have a number of officers at the scene who are there to assist with the investigation, but are also there for the public. Please speak to them if you have any concerns or any information.”
