Wiltshire Police have launched a major investigation following a sharp increase in van break-ins across the county. Over 45 thefts involving high-value power tools have been reported, with Salisbury experiencing the highest number of incidents. Other affected areas include Amesbury, Warminster, and Swindon.
Police believe a single gang is responsible for this series of raids spanning multiple locations. Similar crimes have been reported in neighbouring police force areas, leading to a coordinated effort to tackle the issue.
“Each theft like this can have a severe impact on the victim’s livelihood and business,” said County Neighbourhoods Chief Inspector James Brain. “We’re working closely with other forces to share intelligence and catch these criminals.”
The break-ins generally occur late at night, between 10:30 p.m. and 2 a.m., with offenders often targeting several vans in one incident. Police are urging members of the public to report any suspicious behaviour by calling 101 or using online reporting tools.
To help protect vans from theft, police recommend the following tips:
- Park in well-lit, secure areas that are visible to passers-by.
- Remove or conceal valuable tools when leaving the van unattended.
- Display signs indicating no tools are left inside to deter thieves.
- Mark tools and vans with identifiable markers or paint.
- Reverse park to restrict easy access to side and rear doors.
- Use visible deterrents such as steering locks to discourage criminals.
Wiltshire Police emphasise their commitment to identifying those responsible and securing justice for victims throughout the county.
