Amber warnings have been issued across northern Scotland, where snow is already falling heavily and is expected to continue through lunchtime today. Yellow alerts cover the east and west coasts of England as well as most of Wales. This icy weather pattern is forecast to persist throughout the weekend and into early next week, with roads and railways facing significant disruption due to heavy snow and ice.
Met Office chief forecaster Neil Armstrong said, “Arctic air is gripping the UK with bitter cold lasting through the weekend. Expect double-digit sub-zero temperatures overnight and daytime highs struggling to break above freezing.” He added, “This cold blast could run well into next week with ongoing wintry hazards and more weather warnings. Stay updated and plan ahead.” Snow depths are expected to range from 10-20cm in lowland areas to 30-40cm on hills, with strong winds potentially causing temporary blizzard conditions in some regions.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued amber health alerts until 9 January covering the East Midlands, West Midlands, North East, North West, South East, South West, East of England, and Yorkshire and Humber. These warnings highlight increased health risks, particularly for elderly people and those with pre-existing health conditions. The cold snap could lead to a rise in deaths among vulnerable groups, so extra caution is advised.

Today: Frosty start with inland sunshine. Snow showers will affect windward coasts, especially northern Scotland. Bitter winds will be felt across the country.
Tonight: Heavy snow will continue over northern Scotland with icy patches forming. Eastern England will see some easing of snow, while widespread frost is expected inland.
Sunday: Snow will move inland in northwest England and Wales, with lingering showers along coasts. Other areas will remain dry but very cold.
Monday to Wednesday: Snow will ease on Monday with some sunshine inland. Clouds will increase on Tuesday, bringing rain and hill snow by Wednesday. Winds will calm but frosty nights will persist.
Serious travel disruption is expected, and the public is advised to dress warmly, monitor weather updates, and prepare for a freezing weekend with hazardous conditions.
