Strangeways Prison, one of the largest high-security jails in the UK, is currently on lockdown amid a welfare incident. The prison, located just north of Manchester city centre, holds over 1,200 inmates and is a Category A men’s facility. It was rebuilt after the infamous 1990 Strangeways riot, the largest in British prison history.
On Wednesday afternoon, at around 4:30pm, police were called to Southall Street following concerns for a man’s welfare inside the prison grounds. Specialist negotiators arrived at the scene alongside emergency services to manage the situation.
Greater Manchester Police have sealed off Southall Street and advised the public to avoid the area due to ongoing road closures. A GMP spokeswoman stated, “It is believed that there is no greater threat to the public.” The situation remains fluid as officers and emergency teams work to resolve the incident safely and swiftly.
