A soldier in his 40s remains in serious but stable condition after a stabbing near Brompton Barracks, Gillingham. The shocking attack at Sally Port Gardens sparked a massive emergency response on Tuesday evening, including armed police, forensic teams, and paramedics.
Suspect Caught Fleeing Scene on Moped
Police quickly arrested a 24-year-old local man as he tried to escape on a red moped in Mooring Road, Rochester. Although the stabbing was initially thought not to be terror-related, Counter-Terror Police have now joined Kent Police to back the investigation — though they are not leading it.
Acting Chief Superintendent Richard Woolley said, “We are keeping an open mind as to the motivation behind this incident and are exploring a number of lines of inquiry. These include the possibility this incident was mental health-related as well as any links the suspect may have with the location of the assault.”
Community Shaken, Politicians React
The local community has been left “knocked for six” by the violent attack. Sir Keir Starmer, in his first Prime Minister’s Questions since taking office, expressed shock and sent well wishes to the victim and his family.
An Army spokesperson confirmed the soldier’s serious injuries and stressed privacy and support for the family. They confirmed full cooperation with police to uncover the details.
