Shock gripped the community after six rabbits were found brutally mutilated and dumped in Plumstead Common woodland, London. The grisly discovery was made on Saturday, February 11, when a passerby came across the severely injured dead rabbits lying on a path in Slade Ravine.
The RSPCA revealed the disturbing nature of the injuries sustained by the rabbits. One was found with a stab wound, while another had its ears and tail cruelly severed. All six rabbits suffered severe wounds, with many showing exposed entrails.
Animal rescue officer Mat Hawkins, who collected the carcasses from a PDSA veterinary clinic, expressed serious concerns about the cause of the injuries. The examining veterinarian suspects the rabbits may have been used as bait in dog fighting.
“This looks very suspicious,” said Hawkins. “It’s possible these poor rabbits were used for baiting dogs before being discarded here.”
He added, “While foxes might scavenge rabbit bodies, finding so many dead rabbits in one spot is unusual. One rabbit even had a stab wound. The vet suspected fighting dogs caused the injuries. This is a well-travelled path. Someone may have seen something that night.”
The RSPCA and Metropolitan Police have launched an urgent appeal for information from the public. They are urging anyone who witnessed suspicious activity or has knowledge related to dog fighting to come forward.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the RSPCA’s 24-hour cruelty hotline on 0300 1234 999. The incident has also been reported to the Metropolitan Police and is logged under CAD 1660/11022023.
The RSPCA’s official statement reads: “Six domestic rabbits were found dead with horrific injuries in London woodland. We are appealing for anyone with information to help us investigate.”
The shocking animal cruelty has left the local community on edge and highlights the ongoing issue of animal baiting and dog fighting in the area. Authorities emphasize that any information, no matter how small, could be crucial in bringing those responsible to justice.
