A rare 18th-century poacher trap has disappeared from the entrance wall of Deer Abbey, causing concern among the heritage community. The historic device, once used to catch trespassers and poachers on large estates, was reported missing between the afternoons of Tuesday, June 14 and Wednesday, June 15, 2022.
The loss of this trap is considered a significant blow to efforts to preserve Britain’s historical artifacts and cultural heritage.
Inspector Rory Campbell highlighted the value of such historic sites, stating: “Historic sites form an integral part of our cultural heritage, and far from being places consigned to the past, they are vibrant and alive, welcoming visitors from all over the world.”
Peter McGrath, Head of Physical Security at Historic Environment Scotland, condemned the theft, adding: “Theft from historic sites, whether on our estate or in the wider historic environment, is unacceptable. Acts like this can cause irreparable harm and cause us to lose pieces of our past forever.”
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the theft to contact police by calling 101 and quoting incident 1384 of 20 June 2022. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111.
