More than 50 firefighters responded to a fire at a Portsmouth tower block in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The alarm was raised at 1:44am, prompting crews to rush to Handsworth House in Somers Town to tackle flames in the bin chute.
The fire affected the 15th and 16th floors of the building. Firefighters used six breathing apparatus sets and three powerful jets to battle the blaze. The fire was extinguished in under an hour, with the all-clear given at 4:12am.
South Central Ambulance Service treated and transported two people to hospital due to smoke inhalation. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.
Authorities have launched a joint fire and police investigation to determine the cause of the fire. Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.
