Police in Southampton have recovered two abandoned shotguns along with cartridges, prompting an urgent investigation into their origin and safety implications. The weapons were discovered at a local site and have now been sent to forensics to trace their owners and collect any evidence of handling.
The Firearm Licensing team is currently conducting a thorough check to determine whether the shotguns were legally owned or stolen. In the UK, possession of shotguns and firearms requires a valid Section 1 or Section 2 licence along with an approved reason for ownership.
Local residents have expressed shock and concern over the discovery, fearing the guns and ammunition could have posed a serious risk, especially if found by children. Police are actively investigating who abandoned the weapons and the reasons behind it.
Detective Chief Inspector Brown commented, “Although firearm crimes are rare, community safety remains our top priority. We act fast on reports like this and urge anyone with information to come forward.”
