Fatal crash on A343: Police hunt for witnesses after man dies in early-morning smash

Tragedy struck the northbound A343 at Highclere at dawn today. At 4.31am, cops were called to a crash where a white Mercedes Sprinter van slammed into a tree between Three Legged Cross and the Yew Tree pub.

The 60-year-old driver from Andover was sadly pronounced dead on the scene. The A343 remains shut both ways as officers carry out a collision investigation.

Sergeant Martin Mundy of the Roads Policing Unit urged witnesses to come forward. “We want to trace the driver of a Luton-style vehicle heading south who may have passed the Mercedes just before the collision,” he said.

“Also, a Mazda pulled over to help but drove off before police arrived. We’d like that driver to get in touch urgently.”
