Alan Tankard, a 31-year-old cyclist from Normanton, tragically died after being involved in a hit-and-run crash on Wakefield Road at approximately 11:20pm on Wednesday, April 13.
The collision occurred when a black Honda Civic, travelling northbound, struck Mr. Tankard’s push bike before fleeing the scene.
Police officers later discovered the Honda Civic abandoned near the crash site. Two men have been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and remain in police custody.
The Homicide and Major Enquiry Team (HMET) is conducting an ongoing investigation and is urgently appealing for witnesses who saw the collision or the events leading up to it. Authorities are especially interested in any CCTV or dashcam footage from the area around the time of the incident.
Detective Chief Inspector Helen Steele said: “This has been a very serious collision resulting in the tragic loss of a man’s life. The car involved failed to stop, but two arrests have now been made. We are asking anyone with information to come forward.”
