Old Newhaven Police Station Turns into Smart Affordable Homes
Lewes Council leader James MacCleary recently toured the former Newhaven police station site to check on its impressive makeover. The run-down building is now transforming into 21 affordable homes, including 15 two-bed flats, four one-bed flats, and two three-bedroom houses.
Accessible, Eco-Friendly Living at Heart of Town
One ground-floor flat has been specially designed for wheelchair users. Plus, 11 other flats boast extra accessibility features for those with disabilities. The homes are 100% electric, boasting high insulation, a green living roof, and a huge bike store to promote sustainable travel.
Residents will benefit from the central location close to shops and public transport, with a smart parking permit system that uses nearby council car parks.
Newhaven’s Revival Gains Momentum
Councillor MacCleary highlighted other local upgrades, including transforming the old Co-op into a health and wellbeing hub, repurposing the former UTC building, and improving Dacre Road Car Park. “The council’s plans are finally coming together,” he said.
Housing chief William Meyer praised the project. “Despite tight budgets, converting the old police station into quality council homes is a real win for Newhaven residents facing a housing crunch,” he added.
